Week 2 Update - Ms. Micha’s Builders
Hey there families!
This week was a hit. We had a great time learning together. We played a game or Wolf Ball up at the game field. After hiking to our space, we had Morning Circle. We recalled our Class Agreements our first week together.
I read a book with beautiful illustrations called Giving Thanks, by Chief Jake Swamp. We had so much to be grateful for! We had a little free time, where a student happened upon some deer antlers & others found feathers. We then observed the farm rows, noting the plants that were growing there. We talked about the four directions, & shouted them out together.
We had our Farm Chore of feeding the chickens, gathering eggs & replenishing their food. We made our observations at the Weather Station, & marked them on the clipboard; noting the wind speed, its direction, the temperature & cloud cover. We learned about the Compost toilet & how to use it.
After lunch, we began our carving tutorial. We discussed the carving ABC’s~
A- Always ask permission
B- Bubble (a circle drawn around yourself for safety)
C- Carve off & away from yourself
D- Don’t get distracted
E- End with everything away
T- Tool not toy
Students did wonderfully, working through some nervousness at first. Many had carved before so we worked on honing technique by engaging a thumb on the back end.
Before carving with fixed blade knives, we used butter knives & soap. Some students carved wands, adding colorful yarn as a decoration.
After our carving adventure we circled up to play a game of Native Chief. We chose a Chief, while we had a detective. The detective was to guess who was leading everyone in a repetitive motion like clapping hands, stomping feet & other creative gestures. We ended our day giggling before packing up. At the game field (pick up field) we came together for a huddle where we shared something we were going to take home with us that we learned or enjoyed from our day here on the farm.
Thank you so much everyone! We look forward to the coming weeks!
All the Best,
~Miss Micha
